Lucas appointed captain of SA Legends Team to play Italy Masters
Lucas attended the official Media function today at FNB Stadium to announce the inaugural Nelson Mandela Sport & Culture Day on August 17. That will be the culmination of the broader Unite4Mandela campaign.
For the first time ever Bafana Bafana and the Springboks will play international matches in FNB Stadium on the same day, a true reflection of the national unity that Nelson Mandela has always lived. The two internationals will be preceded by a South African Legends Football Team playing against an Italy Masters XI. Many of the Bafana Bafana players who formed part of the 1996 African Nations Cup winning team – a team inspired by Madiba Magic – will play.
Lucas was chosen to represent the SA XI as captain. “It is fitting way to celebrate Madiba’s passion for sports and culture in South Africa. We all know how symbolically important this was in the formation of the Rainbow Nation and South Africa’s emergence as a democracy. Growing up as boy, I would never have dreamed that there would be truly representative South African Football and Rugby teams, and that they would play international matches in the same stadium, on the same day. Next to Soweto no less and supported by a united country! I am happy that I am still fit enough to get a run, and be an active part of it.”
More details to follow.
