Lucas attends Dreamfields Event
On Saturday 24 August 2013 Lucas joined children, coaches, and a number of FirstRand volunteers at the WH Coetzer School, in Johannesberg South. Dreamfields Project, a not-for-profit section 21 company with the mission to distribute resources for playing soccer into township and rural schools across South Africa, hosted a half day tournament for an initiative called Dreamleagues.
Dreamleagues is one of three main Dreamfields initiatives supporting the Department of Basic Education’s call for schools to play league based soccer. From February to August 170 children from 10 primary schools in Guateng South District took part in a League. Six boys teams and four girls teams emerged from the district as champions and came together to compete for the District Championship title this past Saturday.
Lucas joined Sizwe Nxasana, the CEO of FirstRand, shaking the players hands before their final match and handing out trophies and prizes to the championship teams. At the conclusion of the event Lucas congratulated the players for their accomplishments and spoke to the children about the importance of leadership and teamwork.
Lucas said, “Dreamleagues is a great initiative and I was proud to take part in this event. I am amazed by what Dreamfields Project and the FirstRand Volunteers have been able to accomplish together. A district league for primary schools – definitely a dream of mine growing up!”
John Perlman, CEO of the Dreamfields Project, when referring to Lucas, said, “On top of his huge friendliness and charisma, he delivered a wonderful speech to the children that was warm, thoughtful and inspiring.“
